As The World Burns  

"I have one word for you: Plastics."

Ironically, plastic once symbolized all that was artificial, inferior, and unreal. Today, plastic is revered by scientists as mankind's saving grace. They believe in "saving the world with plastic." There is even a Tupperware Museum in the US, where people speak with hushed voices and exalt the glories of plastic kitchen products, as if they were religious icons. The absurdity of what is glorified in life, by the artificial majority, is almost beyond belief. Instead of all of the most worthless and self-destructive things being seen for what they are and rejected, we accept them.

Did you know that there is a chemical coating that the fast-food outlets have on all of their wrappers, which may cause cancer, and which has found its way into the cells of our bodies, like PCBs and DDT? The producers (Dupont) are aware that this chemical leaches into the food, but they don't care; they have gotten away with these things for decades by concealing health charges. As long as the government doesn't ban it, they'll keep doing it, because this way the wrappers on their burgers won't look greasy, so people won't be concerned about eating fat-laden junk food. It's all about propping up illusions, to deny a greater truth or reality. This is literally what all of those silicone breast implants (by Dow Corning) were about, with very damaging health effects for women, again denied and ignored for decades.

The world is burning while advertisers fiddle and peddle their wares. To listen to the advertisers, the world is being made into a better place, daily, especially by chemicals. For example, "Dow lets you do good things." World Watch magazine, monitoring our declining world condition, noted: "In the giddy, early days of this century's Chemical Age, companies such as Union Carbide and Dow trumpeted the miraculous powers of chemicals ('Better Living Through Chemicals') on billboards and in ad campaigns. All in all, scientists have heaped more than 70,000 new chemical compounds on the bandwagon of progress, creating every imaginable convenience — and chasing every imagined ache or emptiness from our lives. But these new creations have generated, along with their benefits, a long list of problems, including serious health consequences. Our enthusiasm for new chemicals and the products and services they make possible has outstripped our attention to their long-term effects."

As in every field that negatively affects mankind, a peculiarly narrow vision and thinking is found in those who promote chemicals. The rationale of business, marketing, and advertising is: if people will buy it and a profit can be made, then it is "good." Sure. "While billions of dollars have been lavished on product development, marketing, promotion, and advertising, very little has been devoted to observing chemicals' interactions with living things and the environment. The sheer number of combinations these chemicals now represent — in our food, water, clothing, and homes — are astronomical." Producers have for many decades routinely dumped the most toxic chemicals onto the ground, into the water, and into the air. In places such as Love Canal, they buried chemical wastes in the ground, and let a community be built on top of it. The chemicals leached up through the ground, children and adults got cancer and other diseases, and they had no idea why. This is an example that applies to the rest of us as well. We live our daily lives oblivious of the effect everything has on us, until, perhaps, our bodies get cancerous and we die. Why is that? Why are we so complacent in our own destruction?

Life in this world is a charade, in which all that matters is people's confidence in the illusion that everything is working, and everything is "good." How could the stock market's Dow Jones average reach all-time highs while the world was visibly disintegrating? How could confidence in the future have been high while we witnessed ethnic cleansing, a billion dollar space probe self-destructing, the global economy faltering, twenty billion dollars in devastation from unprecedented flooding in the US, the ozone-hole above the south pole growing larger than ever (largely due to chemicals released into the atmosphere), and the only employment prospects for young people being in fast-food outlets? The answer is: the stock market reflects the confidence of the rich and powerful financial interests in their ability to make more money. This "confidence" of the powers-that-be is huge when the Illusion is strong. They depend upon your unawareness, ignorance, programming, and complacency. In other words, they expect to make money while others suffer. Nothing new here. The most evil people have always exploited their "fellow man" and profited from problems which they have largely caused, and illusions they have upheld. The main result: just about everything everywhere is polluted, decaying, and dying. And, people are beginning to realize this, now.

The world is, largely, a closed system. Nearly everything that is produced here, whether by nature or by mankind, stays in the environment. It just moves to other parts of the system, over time. The very things we once assumed to be "good" are proving to be poisonous, deadly, and destructive. This is why there is greater propaganda than ever to reduce awareness and convince people otherwise. Lee Iacocca, former chairman and chief executive officer of Chrysler Corporation once declared: "We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?"
