Abortion
"If you would lift me you must be on a higher ground."
— Emerson
Abortion is one of the most difficult subjects to discuss or understand.
There are two, main, different, opposing and generally irreconcilable viewpoints. And, the adherents of each of these two positions are often militant. Each asserts "rights." Neither is quite right.
On one hand, you generally have religious belief, indoctrination, and programming. It is believed that parents create a human being at conception, as soon as a sperm meets an egg. And, that "life" must be protected at all costs.
On the other hand, you generally have scientific belief, indoctrination, and programming which promotes the belief that a developing embryo or fetus is not really a "human life" until after birth takes place.
Some have strong ideological or spiritual beliefs in the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness; some interpret this as a woman's right to have an abortion, some the opposite. Some believe life is entirely physical, that there is no such thing as a spirit or soul, and it doesn't matter at all what happens to a fetus prior to birth. Others feel it is necessary to keep women from having control over their own bodies, that men should have that role and responsibility.
And there are others with mixed beliefs such as the "right-to-lifers" who have changed positions to say an embryo is not really a human life, because — out of righteous self-interest, and worship of the almighty dollar — they want big business to be able to use embryos for medical research. It is a mass of confusion, conflict, ignorance, and misunderstanding.
Fanaticism only breeds closed-mindedness, ignorance, and wrong behavior.
The most fervent, hypocritical, religious "believers" have engaged in terrorism, and see nothing at all wrong with going out and killing people to prevent abortion, or bombing or burning clinics. Their self-righteous beliefs often cause a lot more harm than good — for others.
There is a pill which prevents conception, which a woman can take if she was raped or otherwise needed to simply not get pregnant (which is not the same as aborting an embryo or fetus) — and avoid considering or seeking an abortion, later on. Yet, the right-to-lifers have blocked this pill from being sold over the counter (although the FDA admitted it is totally safe); they won't allow it to be dispensed in many pharmacies; and compassionate, Christian conservative doctors refuse to tell rape victims about the pill — even when the law requires a woman to have access to it, to prevent pregnancy. The result? Instead of allowing contraception, the right-to-lifers are manufacturing a demand for abortion. Women in this situation say they are basically forced to turn to an abortion, by religious zealots who want to ban abortion. How much more confusing can it get? And, isn't it obvious that, if abortion were made illegal, women would once again be forced to turn to notorious back-alley procedures? But, the religionists would sleep well at night, once more. read more ...
